In a significant boost to the Indian Navy’s defense capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has inked a Rs 2,956 crore deal with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) for the procurement of 16 upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mounts (SRGMs) along with associated equipment and accessories. These advanced weapon systems will play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime borders and enhancing its overall defense preparedness.

Enhanced Capabilities of Upgraded SRGMs

The upgraded SRGMs are medium-caliber anti-missile and anti-aircraft defense weapon systems that offer a sustained rate of fire and exceptional accuracy. They are designed to effectively engage multiple targets simultaneously, making them an invaluable asset in multi-threat scenarios. Additionally, these weapon systems have a proven track record of exceptional performance against missiles and highly maneuverable fast attack crafts.

Strategic Deployment of Upgraded SRGMs

The Indian Navy plans to strategically deploy the upgraded SRGMs onboard its in-service and newly built ships. This strategic deployment will significantly enhance the Navy’s ability to defend against a wide range of maritime threats, including aerial and missile attacks.

Economic and Industrial Benefits

The procurement of upgraded SRGMs is not only strategically important but also expected to generate significant economic and industrial benefits. The project is estimated to create employment opportunities for approximately 2.5 lakh mandays over a period of five years. Additionally, it will encourage active participation of various Indian industries, including MSMEs, contributing significantly to the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) initiative in the defense sector.

Conclusion

The acquisition of upgraded SRGMs marks a significant milestone in the Indian Navy’s ongoing modernization efforts. These advanced weapon systems will undoubtedly strengthen the Navy’s defense capabilities and play a vital role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.
