With a price tag of Rs 20.50 crore, World Cup-winning Australian captain Pat Cummins has become the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Cummins was sold to the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL Auction 2024 on Tuesday, December 19, held at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. He started at a base price of Rs 2.00 crore, with Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians initially vying for the player. Later, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) came to the bidding table and raised the price to Rs 5.00 crore. Sunrisers Hyderabad joined in and started the bidding war with RCB with Hyderabad scoping him for Rs. 20.50 crore making him the most expensive player in IPL History.

Cummins broke the record of Sam Curran, who was sold to the Punjab Kings in the IPL Auction 2023 at a price of Rs 18.50 crore. Yuvraj Singh still holds the record for the most expensive Indian player at Rs 16 crore when he was sold to Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2015.

Record Broken Again!

Moments later, Cummins’ compatriot Mitchell Starc broke his record for the most expensive player in IPL history as he was sold to Kolkata Knight Rider for Rs 24.75 crore.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the auction:

Pat Cummins is now second most expensive player in IPL history.
Mitchell Starc broke Cummins’ record to become the most expensive player in IPL history.
Sam Curran held the previous record for the most expensive player in IPL history, which was set in 2023.
Yuvraj Singh still holds the record for the most expensive Indian player in IPL history.
What does this mean for the IPL?

The high price tags paid for Cummins and Starc show that the IPL is a growing league with a lot of money at stake. This is good news for players, who can now command higher salaries. It is also good news for fans, who can expect to see some of the best players in the world compete in the IPL.

Overall, the IPL Auction 2024 was an exciting event with some record-breaking bids. It will be interesting to see how these players perform in the upcoming IPL season.
